…ess? Would you assume that everyone else would like you to treat them similarly? In both scenarios, I never asked you for it, and you built the wrong idea about your behavior just by my reaction to your offer.

If you are being thoughtful, you aren't in it for the reaction, I think. Definitely can't assume that someone will react a certain way, unless you want to be disappointed!! ;)
