If You Haven’t Had Tamales During The Christmas Season, You are Missing Out

The Christmas tamale tradition that we adopted

A few years ago, we flew to Mexico with our group of friends for Thanksgiving break. We only speak a lick of Spanish but one of our friends is fluent and moved here from Mexico when he was 10 years old.

Traveling with someone that speaks the language is like night and day. It makes traveling so much easier and it is also why I try to learn the basics of any language if I am traveling out of the country.

We did a walking food tour in Tulum and it was the highlight of our trip. We were lucky enough to have the best tamales in the world, or so we thought. Homemade tamales from a little hole-in-the-wall shop and they were to die for.

We all couldn’t stop thinking of those tamales for the rest of our trip. Our friend that speaks fluent Spanish got some tips and tricks for the tamales from a local.

When Christmas rolled around a month later, we decided that we were going to try making…
