This story takes place in the summer of 1993, just before I started high school.

If you’ve read my previous stories, you’ll know that my mom kicked me out of the house when I was 11. I moved to San Pedro, CA in 1989 and started junior high.

For some reason, back in the day, junior high in that area went from grade 7 to 9. So, we didn’t have a “freshman” year in high school.

Starting high school as a sophomore was a blessing in disguise for me.

So, it was the summer after junior high, and my best friend had started to hang out with this questionable group of guys, down in a bad part of town. She met them through her cousin.

San Pedro is in Los Angeles County just 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. It’s a very diverse city and as I said, has some not-so-nice areas.

I was uneasy about her hanging out with these people. We’d heard about all the violent gang activity down near the “projects”. The projects are low-income housing, which is great for individuals that might otherwise be homeless because they can’t afford rent.

Sadly, the projects are usually accompanied by drugs, violence, crime, and gangsters.
