I’m that person who will purposefully pretend I don’t see someone to avoid forced conversations and forgotten names, and the anxiety I feel in my chest while doing something as simple as standing in line at the grocery store is nearly unbearable. I don’t know where to look, sweat, and often end up with last-minute items on the belt I convinced myself I needed while trying to distract myself from the panic; chapstick, batteries, candy, and lighters.
