This story tugs at my heart. I can imagine the pain and then joy in your sons eyes. I hope that where you are now, people are more accepting and stereotype less because that is a sad fact of living in the US. Like you said, we are all people. We are all human beings. I grew up in a very diverse area and was often called the "weda" - that was back when the hispanic gangs were big in my hometown and I wanted to hang out with them. Anyway, I think because I grew up with every race around, it makes it hard for me to accept that is the way it is in most parts of the US.
