Wow! So all of your friends knew your dogs were in the CAR and they were all okay with that?

And so I compromised. I politely bowed out of the staying over but went along for lunch, and my dogs waited patiently in the car. They did get to enjoy a little play in the garden — at which point they were the entertainment for the kids!
No Partner or Kids, but Double the Expense
